Welcome to Austin

As mythological sirens lure in sailors with their voices, Austin draws in folks with octaves of live shows (minus the risk of shipwreck). This metropolitan area is regarded as the live music capital of the world and the home of the Texas State Capitol building. For local historical records and collections, The Austin History Center is a rich resource. A good deal of burgeoning technology companies have established their headquarters in Austin, attracting talent inside and outside of Texas. Austinites vow to “Keep Austin Weird'' by supporting the small local businesses that make the city special. Out of the wide variety of residential architecture styles, the most common designs constructed are bungalow and contemporary.

Young wage-earners and their families, as well as a body of studious University of Texas students, comprise a community rich in cultural heritage and identity representation. A massive annual event facilitating professional career networking opportunities, South by Southwest (SXSW in shorthand) is a conglomeration of business conference sessions, marketing exhibitions, music, and film festivals.

What to Love

  • Local musical acts and groups on tour performing at venues of all capacities
  • Unique businesses that “keep Austin weird”
  • Vibrant nightlife with everything from dance clubs to dive bars

Local Lifestyle

Several distinct entertainment districts come together in a vivid patchwork quilt. Sixth Street is considered party central, capturing the youthful essence of Austin; in contrast, the South district reflects a more mellow old-school Austin. Day and night, the thriving arts and live music scene unites Austinites and contributes to the laid-back vibe. With a high concentration of nightclubs such as Barbarella and Elysium, the Red River district is where the wild things are engaging in nocturnal activity while DJs mix and remix dance anthems.

The Mohawk bar and concert venue welcomes everyone and all genres. The Blanton Museum of Art, located on the University of Texas at Austin campus, houses impressive, curated collections. A couple of cherished local hangouts are a jazz club called Elephant Room, and the Cheer Up Charlies vegan bar with kombucha on tap and a parachute shading the outdoor patio.

Dining, Entertainment & Shopping

You can get a taste of authentic Texas barbecue at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q and buy tickets for a live music show at their venue, Waller Creek Amphitheater. Highly-rated restaurants in the East district include the laundromat-turned-cafe Launderette, and Suerte, where Austinites feel lucky to experience such an inventive take on Tex-Mex. Bungalow homes along the tree-lined Rainey Street have been converted into hip and happening gathering spots such as Banger’s Sausage House and Beer Garden, where dogs are also invited into the large outside patio. When you go, try the bratwurst with a side of sauerkraut, both assembled in-house.

The North and Northwest district boasts two outdoor premier shopping centers, The Domain and the Arboretum, which makes a retail therapy appointment feel like a luxurious walk in the park. At The Domain you will find brands like Coach and Louis Vuitton. At The Arboretum you will find Pottery Barn and Barnes and Nobles.

Things to Do

Austin is action-packed; even the Whole Foods flagship store hosts regular community events on its rooftop. When the working day is done, locals just want to have fun at offbeat dive bars like LaLa’s Little Nugget, which is decorated with a Christmas motif year-round.

Treasure hunters will find themselves enthralled in the vintage and thrift boutiques. A funky bunch is congregated in the South Congress (SoCo) district; exhibit A is a costume emporium with a clever moniker, Lucy In Disguise with Diamonds.

Schools

The Austin community is served by numerous independent school districts.
